“Aérophile”
– as the captive balloon is called – is the largest balloon
in the world. It has a 5,500 m3 envelope permanently inflated with helium
and a circular passenger cabin equipped to carry up to 30 people at a
time. It is attached to the ground by a cable which, when fully extended,
lifts its passengers 150 metres into the air.
Once they have risen above the tower buildings in the Nord
district, passengers will have a breathtaking panoramic view over Brussels
from their central location between the Grand’Place, the Hôtel
de Ville, the Basilica of Koekelberg, the Atomium and the European district.
On clear days it will be possible to see over a
distance of between 30 and 40 km. From aloft passengers will get a full
picture of contemporary Brussels, with its residential districts, ultramodern
business centre, old town, major avenues, large train station, parks,
canal, port, industrial areas and much more.
